There is a global trend towards the endorsement of gender quotas in political and economic decision-making structures raising the question of gender parity as global governance aspiration. International and regional organizations which have endorsed the use of gender quotas include the UN, ILO, OECD, the European Union, the Council of Europe and the Organization of American States. Moreover, these global and regional institutions appear to be increasingly coordinating amongst themselves and also linking up with national and local initiatives in their efforts to advance the agenda of women’s empowerment. This high level seminar is intended to provide a systematic and comparative perspective on the promotion, adoption and implementation of gender quotas in political and economic structures throughout the world, but also, and more importantly, to discuss their underlying logic, expected effects, and conceptual contributions to widespread understandings of equality, democracy and global governance.
