A l’occasion de son passage en France, Geraldine Pratt donnera, le mardi 29 septembre à 16 heures à l’Institut de Géographie (nouvel amphithéâtre), 191 rue Saint-Jacques, une conférence intitulée : “Temporary Foreign Workers : the case of Canada’s Live-in Caregiver Program”
Résumé :
Canada’s temporary domestic worker program is symptomatic of a massive expansion of temporary foreign workers program worldwide. I consider the difficulties addressing the ethics and justice of such programs, and then turn to my research over the last fourteen years on Canada’s Live-in Caregiver Program to assess the effects of this program on Filipino women and their children who reunite with them in Canada. Frustration with lack of government response to decades of research on this topic by a number of researchers has led us to a new research strategy, the use of testimonial theatre to stimulate a wider public debate around this issue. An instance of participatory action research, the turn to theatre reflects current interest in anglo-american cultural and feminist geography in performance, affect and critical public geographies.
Geraldine Pratt est professeure au département de géographie de l’University of British Columbia (Vancouver). Elle est une des figures majeures de la géographie féministe nord-américaine. Elle a publié de nombreux articles et ouvrages comme Gender, Work and Space (1995, avec Susan Hanson), the Dictionary of Human Geography (2000, co-dirigé avec Derek Gregory et Ron Johnston), Working Feminism (2004). Elle fait partie du comité de rédaction d’Environment and Planning D : Society and Space. Sa conférence souhaite être une contribution au débat sur le développement de méthodologies féministes dans les sciences sociales, et plus particulièrement en géographie.
