Fourth International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Emotional Geographies

1-3 July 2013 at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands

Session Organisers : Rachel Colls and Abi McNiven, Durham University, UK.

This call for papers is interested in the various ways in which the spatiality of ‘the bodily interior’ matters to emotional geographies research. In so doing, it provides the forum to bring together work that explicitly focuses on how we sense and feel the insides of our bodies as well that which draws attention to the ways that a logic of interior (and exterior) and inside (and outside) is of significance when considering the capacities with which ‘emotions’, ‘affect’ and ‘feelings’ are sensed, narrated, located, managed and can move. A focus on ‘the interior’ as a spatial register through which to make sense of our embodied and emotional worlds invites a consideration of a range of empirical and theoretical contexts. For example, this session is interested in drawing out the specificities of differentiated bodily interiors and processes, such as reproduction and the materialities of bodily substances ; the discourses, techniques and practices that are used to interrogate our emotions, and our relationships with other bodies and specific spaces and places ; and the range of conceptual and theoretical vocabularies which explicitly reproduce specific spatialities in order to understand the nature of ‘affect’ and ‘emotion’.

The session organisers invite papers on the following topics/themes, but this list is not exhaustive :

Theoretical accounts of affect and emotion
Therapy and counselling techniques
Bodily organs, fluids and processes
Representations of bodily interiors
Reproduction and pregnancy loss
Organ Transplantation
Medical procedures and medicine
Alternative therapies
The ‘bodily interior’ in relation to the broader geography discipline and agendas
Methodological considerations in researching ‘the bodily interior’

Deadline for submission of abstracts is 14th December 2012
Abstracts should be submitted to Rachel Colls rachel.colls@durham.ac.uk
