Semestre 1, mercredi 12h-15h

In the United Staes, the sixties and seventies were crucial years in the shaping of the new social, ethical and political order that came out of World War II ; studying what happened during those two decades helps us to better understand today’s world. Hollywood having more often than not functionned as a mirror of what was happening in the real world, the burning social issues of the period became the topics of a large number of films.

This class is intended as an introduction to these two decades through an analysis of several films focusing on such questions as the perception of the other (race, gender, young people…), the emergence of both the young and the Blacks as new social – and new consumer – groups, the relationship of the individual to politics and the social changes of the time. Of course, these topics, which are obviously all interrelated, are markers of the evolution of political, social and family relationships.

Students will have to research for background information (history and social history of the period, reception of the films by their contemporaries, history of the movies…) in preparation for their 15 to 20 page final essay on a topic of their choice showing the different shapes taken by those changes.
