Les pratiques hétérogènes, le statut ambigu de la photographie en ont fait un puissant levier critique qui a bouleversé l’ordre de la représentation et l’économie des images, matérielles ou tropiques. Longtemps opposée à la peinture, elle entretient également avec la littérature des rapports complexes et féconds d’interrogation mutuelle. Nous nous proposons, au cours de ce séminaire, de repérer et étudier, chez quelques photographes et écrivains américains ou canadiens du XXe siècle, la mise à l’épreuve de certains modes d’articulation possibles entre images et mots : citation, adoption, incorporation, collaboration, émulation, ciconscription, neutralisation, subordination, rejet… Corpus non exhaustif : Margaret Attwood, Paul Auster, John Baldessari, Margaret Bourke-White, Ray Carver, Robert Creeley, Guy Davenport, Roy De Carava William Faulkner, Allen Ginsberg, Nan Goldin, Tom Gunn, Julie Hecht, Langston Hughes, Walker Evans, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Duane Michals, Wright Morris, Alice Munro, Cynthia Ozick, Richard Powers, Anne Sexton, Lauren Slater, Frederick Sommer, Eudora Welty, Minor White, William Vollman.
